Speech, Language and Communication Journey: Stages
0-12 Months
I was born ready to learn language from you
Did you know...?
I can recognise familiar faces and start to recognise my name by my 1st birthday
I enjoy listening to your voice.
By 2-4 months I am interested in different pitches – use a sing song voice with me
I learn better when I’m with someone that I feel safe with
I use sounds to express how I’m feeling and I am beginning to use gestures
Things to do with me
Experiment with making different sounds. You could try silly sounds, animal noises or vehicle noises – I may smile or laugh if I find you funny.
Pull funny faces at me, it will hold my attention and may make me laugh. I will begin to copy your expressions.
If a make a noise, repeat it back and wait to see if I copy it.
Respond to me if make a gesture, I may reach out for toys or begin to hold out my hands to be picked up.
Sing songs such as 'Baa baa black sheep', 'Twinkle twinkle little star', or any other nursery rhymes from your own culture and/or childhood. I will recognise familiar tunes and it will support my learning of language.
