When Shabana Rashid first became a Parent Champion with North Halifax Partnership, she never imagined it would be the first step towards a new career. 

After spending 20 years as a full-time mum, the thought of returning to the workplace felt daunting. Shabana said: 

“I was very nervous and I hesitated to apply at first. But I built up the courage knowing that the experience I gained as a mother was invaluable, that I had a lot to offer, and that this would be a good start to getting into employment.” 

That decision proved to be life-changing. As a Parent Champion volunteer, Shabana quickly became part of the Family Hubs community. She welcomed visitors on reception, answered phone calls, supported staff and took part in events promoting the Family Hubs across Calderdale, including activities at The Piece Hall. She also helped organise monthly Parent Champion meetings by taking and sharing the meeting minutes. For Shabana, volunteering was about much more than gaining experience. 

“It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase who I was through my experiences as an individual and a parent. I got to meet new people, work as part of a team and become involved in lots of different activities.” 

During this time, Shabana experienced the loss of her beloved dad, who had always encouraged her to believe in herself. 

“My dad always wanted me to do well in life and knew I had the potential to do it. He was very proud of who I had become and was by my side throughout my life. His kind words and encouragement always made me believe in myself.” 

Inspired by his support and encouraged by the confidence she had gained through volunteering, Shabana decided to apply for a sessional worker role with North Halifax Partnership. When she received the news that she had been successful, it was an emotional moment. 

“I couldn’t believe it at first. I was excited, grateful and emotional. This was my first step into employment after so many years, and it gave me the confidence to believe in myself and opened the door for new opportunities.” 

Today, Shabana works as a Receptionist across Kevin Pearce and Jubilee Family Hubs, where she is often one of the first friendly faces people see when they arrive. 

“As a Receptionist, what I enjoy most is that I can make someone’s day a little easier, whether it’s offering a warm welcome, helping someone find the support they need, or simply having a friendly conversation. I love working as part of a team, learning new skills and that every day brings something different. I also created a Family Hubs directory which visitors can use to get an overview of everything we offer here.” 

Looking back, Shabana believes becoming a Parent Champion was the start of an incredible journey and would encourage other parents to consider volunteering. 

“I would encourage all parents to try volunteering as a Parent Champion. You’ll gain experience, discover what you have to offer and build your confidence. I think it’s a wonderful way to start your own journey.”
