Do I need experience of breastfeeding to become a Peer Supporter?
Yes, to become a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter, you need to have experience of breastfeeding your baby for at least 4 months.
What is the process for applying?
After completion of the application form, (link at the bottom of the page) you will be invited to meet with the service Coordinators to discuss the role and the next steps. We will also ask for your consent to complete a DBS check.
Will I have any training?
Yes, you will need to attend a free training programme. The training is designed to give you the confidence and skills to be a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter and reflects the standards of the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative.
What will I be expected to do once I have finished the training?
Calderdale Breastfeeding Peer Supporters support expectant mums and new mums in a variety of settings. This could be on the postnatal ward at the Calderdale Royal Hospital, at a Breastfeeding Group in a Family Hub, meeting expectant families at the midwife antenatal clinic or online support via the Calderdale Mum to Mum Breastfeeding Support Group on Facebook or telephone support. We will discuss with you what would suit you, your availability and your circumstances.
What are the benefits of being a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter?
Many Peer Supporters say that their experience of volunteering has a positive impact on them as individuals. They say they gain increased confidence in knowing that they can support mums and feel valued in their role. Some have used the experience to support a career change.
Mums and their partners tell us all the time, how much they have appreciated the support from a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter and how it has helped them to continue breastfeeding for as long as they wanted.
What support will I receive as a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter?
You will receive ongoing contact and supervision with Coordinators from Locala’s Public Health Early Years Service, ongoing training, an invitation to an annual conference and celebration event. We provide travel expenses and any equipment that you may need.
